How to solve average questions

  1. Total = average × number of items. Work with totals, then divide at the end.
  2. For consecutive numbers, the average is the middle number.
  3. When a new person joins and the average changes by d, their value = new average + (old count × d), or simply new total − old total.

Common trap: When someone joins, the count increases by one. Using the old count for the new total is the classic slip.
