Percentage questions with solutions

Percentage is the base of profit and loss, interest, data interpretation and ratio questions. SSC and railway papers also ask direct percentage questions. Knowing fraction equivalents (12.5% = 1/8, 37.5% = 3/8, 16⅔% = 1/6) saves a lot of time.

How to solve percentage questions

  1. “A is p% more than B” means A = B × (100 + p)/100. B is then less than A by p/(100 + p) × 100 percent.
  2. For two successive changes of a% and b%, the net change is a + b + ab/100 (use negative values for decreases).
  3. Convert percentages to fractions where possible: 45% of 800 is quicker as 800 × 9/20.

Common trap: A 20% rise followed by a 20% fall is not zero; it is a 4% loss.
